POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Reading Intervention Teacher
School/Department: Designated School
Supervisor: Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of English Language Learners and Academic Intervention
Terms of Employment: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement
Primary Function:
The Reading Intervention Teacher supports students by providing targeted, individualized instruction based on the Science of Reading. This approach includes systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The teacher will assess students’ specific reading challenges and implement evidence-based strategies to improve their skills. Collaboration with classroom teachers, parents, and other staff members will be essential in creating a supportive, effective learning environment.
Essential Duties: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
Partner with administration and teaching staff to best support students with academic intervention.
Implement research-based best instructional approaches in the assigned subject(s) and grade level(s) – within the interventionist’s classroom and, if requested, in the general education classroom.
Utilize data to determine instructional approaches to bridge the gap in student learning.
Participate in faculty and professional meetings, district meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
As requested, participate in curriculum development and/or textbook/resource adoption for the assigned subject(s) and grade level(s).
Administer assessments to students assigned for intervention in order to determine individual students’ initial learning needs within the developmental sequence of the assigned skill area, develop individualized and measurable growth goals, continually monitor progress, and update goals to ensure continuous growth.
Administer all Characteristics of Dyslexia assessments and communicate results with appropriate individuals.
Plan and direct individual and group lessons and activities to ensure skill development and standards mastery, considering such factors as students’ individual needs, abilities, and backgrounds.
Utilize various teaching methods and appropriate technologies to meet individual student needs in whole group, small group, and/or 1:1 settings.
Provide actionable feedback on pupils’ academic and behavioral performance to students, parents, classroom teachers, and administrators. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure a unified learning plan and success for each student.
Keep attendance, achievement, and growth data for each child receiving support.
Follow all Title I Federal and State requirements.
Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Characteristics:
The education and educator license or permit required by the Indiana Department of Education
Science of Reading endorsement by 2027.
The ability to manage a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment.
A positive, student-centered, and solution-focused attitude towards education and students.
Effective organizational skills.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with others.
Ability to communicate effectively before groups of students, staff, and parents.
Proven instructional leader.
Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.
Working Conditions:
The duties of this position are performed in a classroom environment. Persons are required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch. Additionally, persons may need to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception. Noise levels in the working environments may be moderately loud or loud. Occasionally, persons are required to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
